Haida argillite stone totem with concave back
Material: Argalite
Origin: Queen Charlotte Islands, BC
Circa: 1880
Dimensions: 18" tall, base 4 1/4" x 4 1/4"

An impressive and large early Haida argillite stone totem. Crest figures depict a beaver, bear and Killer whale. The totem is from the earliest period of argillite totems. This is a really big early well carved example.

Kwakiutl totem pole by famous Charlie James
Origin: Northwest Coast
Circa: 1915-1920
Dimensions: 15" tall with a 8 3/4" wingspan

A very fine old Kwakiutl totem pole by the famous Charlie James. The totem features wonderful imagery of a Thunderbird and Bear biting the tail of killer whale, note the cool face carved in for a blow hole on the whale. In prefect original condition. Clearly signed both Charlie James and his Native name Yakuglas to the reverse. You won't find a better preserved example. The totem is a great early work by this highly desirable artist.

Kwakiutl totem pole by famous Charlie James
Material: Red Cedar
Origin: Northwest Coast
Circa: 1915-1920
Dimensions: Height 17" with a 8 1/4" wingspan

A great early Kwakiutl hand carved and painted red cedar totem pole by the famous Charlie James (1867-1938). The totem features a Thunderbird standing over a bear clutching a human captive. The human figure is holding a ceremonial copper. Dark aged patina and with original painted pigments showing fading from great age and handling. Signed faintly to the reverse Charlie James. One wing has an old clean repaired split noted. Also a repaired split at the base most likely done by the artist while carving the totem which is fastened with old nails. The totem is a great early work by this highly desirable artist.

Tlingit totem pole
Material: Red Cedar
Origin: Northwest Coast
Circa: 1890
Dimensions: Height 16 1/2" tall x 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

A great early and unusual Tlingit red cedar totem pole. An individually carved diving Cormorant or Kingfisher is located at the top, followed by a mosquito biting the back of a frog. a seated bear with raised paws at base. A very unusual feature of the pole is that the bird at the top is designed to pivot at the top via the back. Great aged patina and original condition. Carved from one piece of wood.

Tlingit model totem pole
Material: Red Cedar
Origin: Northwest Coast, Sitka area
Circa: 1900
Dimensions: 24" tall

A fine large Tlingit red cedar model totem pole. Great large size standing 24" tall not including the base. Features a Beaver chewing on a stick, Bear biting a halibuts tail and a shaman face at bottom. Nice aged patina and great deep expressive carving.
Probably originated from the Sitka area.

Early Haida hollow back cedar totem pole
Material: Cedar
Origin: Northwest Coast, Haida
Circa: 1890
Dimensions: 20 1/2" tall

A very rare and spectacular early Haida hollow back cedar totem pole. The most unusual feature of this totem is that it wasn't quite finished, but the parts that were have been done to the highest order of carving. The totem stands an excellent size and features a gentle hollow back. This is really an amazing study piece and is worthy of any museum setting. Note the precision of the completed carved side, amazing ovoid, split u forms, and classic 19th century form line carving. Appropriate patina with age.

Tsimshian or Bella Bella model totem

A good early northwest Coast Tsimshian or Bella Bella model totem pole. Model totems from these northern Tribal groups are some of the rarest. This example features wonderful and rather rare imagery of an Owl perched on the top holding a fish in his talons, followed by a dancing shaman and a fat frog acting as the base. Painted in great old and original pigments of red and black. excellent condition.
